Shan – his hundred clones – and the other three walked through the trees until they arrived at a clearing. All around them were very large and sturdy looking trees.

“This, is your training. It’s simple, apply chakra to your feet and walk up the tree. If you master that in the time that we are out here, then you can meet me at the lake.” The Jounin pointed at a small lake just outside of the clearing. Shan almost scoffed at the training. He had walked on a cave ceiling long before he had become a Genin or Chuunin. This should be easy for him.

“Tsk, gathering chakra in my feet? This is easy” Shan grumbled as he began to make a hand sign. He stopped when he noticed the Jounin raise his hand.

“Keep the clones. Not only will you train faster, but it will also be harder. You don’t have access to all of your chakra when you are using some to maintain the clones. That split attention will make this task far more difficult – and you will gain far more from it than otherwise.” The Jounin said smartly. As much as Shan hated having a teacher, he had to admit that the instructor was correct.

“Well, let’s get to climbing.” Thirty-four of the shan’s said, including the real one. They all chose a tree and stared it down. Shan couldn’t speak for his clones, but he was still a little miffed at doing this training. He was above such meaningless exercises, after-all. He could already walk on walls and he doubted that having clones out would make being able to control his chakra that much more difficult. He could still perform jutsu when he had clones, after-all.

Shan gathered chakra in his feet. It wasn’t hard, so he didn’t need to focus too much on the task.

Shan walked forward. His hundred clones followed suit – each moving in perfect synchronicity as him. The two Genin moved at their own pace and were more hesitant than the many Shan’s. The real Shan focused on himself rather than his clones. It wouldn’t do to fail simply because he was paying too much attention to his clones. Besides, he was the real one. He had to set the example.

He walked casually forward until his feet hit the tree. The first step moved him sideways up the tree and the chakra clung to it. He was doing it.

For one step, at least.

Shan took another step. He could see out of the corner of his eyes that his clones were doing similar. This was easy…

His foot slipped. Shan ran through the possibilities of what happened in his mind. Did he stop on something wet? Did he miss the tree?

No, he didn’t use enough chakra or he had lost control of the chakra. Shan felt his body falling into the air and just managed to flip over and land without harm. He looked around. The other one hundred Shan’s were faring roughly the same, some had used too much and ended up falling. Others had used too little.

The two genin were in the same boat as Shan. He was no better than a Genin.
