Fuu sat with her legs crossed, concentrating within the middle of the court yard at least that's what she was trying to do. The heat of the afternoon sun was distracting enough on it's own, something that she was quickly learning to shut out, but the more she pushed at the range that she could sense the chakra around her the more distracting the sense became. It wasn't very far out right now but while she was concentrating on it like this even the small insects that made their way through the sand were made apparent to her, and each one was worthy of focus to her mind making it an effort of willpower not to get off track with every new creature that passed by. It wasn't long at all before another distraction held her attention, the wind was staring to pick up and blow sand at her an unpleasantness of the feeling that might have gotten her to stop if she wasn't so devoted to becoming better at this important shinobi skill. Fuu was waiting for something, more over someone that she was meant to sense before they were too close, her teacher was helping her hone her naturally good sense into a more useful tool.
Fuu was essentially alone with her mind, if she were to move too soon then that would be a fail but if she moved to late then she would fail and likely get bonked on the head. Another few minutes passed without any significant feeling that anyone was approaching and Fuu was starting to wonder if her teacher had gone to lunch and just left her sitting there alone but just as the thought crossed her mind she felt it, from behind her and she rolled out of the way to the sound of soft thuds in the sand. She opened her eyes to see that there were training shuriken in the sand where she had just been and she scanned the open field to find where they had come from.
The sound of someone clearing their throat behind her caused her to swivel around and fall on her butt. "Nice effort Fuu but you need to remember not to focus in on one thing as soon as you get the chance." Fuu pouted at them for a second before standing back up.
"Well, can we do a more exciting training now? I was just sitting there waiting for you to attack me for ages." The teacher frowned at the statment but sighed. "I suppose you are taking the extra time, come on let's get to your aim with shuriken."
Fuu happily complied with that and went to grab the wooden training implements from the ground where they were pressed into the sand. She rolled them in her hands and caught them between her fingers and smiled. "I guess it's important but I wish it was with melee." The teacher rolled her eyes at the small girl, the scythe she got as a present last year had hardly left her side ever since and she would take any chance to use it rather than the 'training weapons' if she could get away with it.
"Focus on what we are doing now and we can worry about that next time. Now I'm going to make circles in the sand and you hit them with the shuriken I'll pick up the pace eventually so try and keep up while we move around." Fuu nodded and the exercise started easy. One at a time the circles were made on the ground and Fuu tossed a shuriken into the center of it. She started having to pick up her thrown shuriken and reuse them, chasing after her teacher. Nearly an hour of this and Fuu had managed to keep the accuracy but not her pace, she was running out of stamina faster than she would have liked and eventually just stopped altogether panting and holding her knees. She hadn't noticed before but they hadn't been running in circles either, by the looks of it they had managed to cross the whole village. Fuu wasn't exactly sure what the reason for doing that had been until her teacher approached her and gave her some water. "Remember what I said before Fuu, stay aware you need to always know where your enemy is and what they are doing. If you get lead around without paying attention it can turn bad for you in an instant." Fuu wasn't sure that she understood exactly what he was getting at but she nodded to him.
They parted ways from there and Fuu went back home with a little more to think about, she was deeper in thought than she might have realized wondering what the meaning of the lesson was supposed to be. She felt a small tingle from behind herself and moved her scythe in the way of the projectile just in time. Two wooden shuriken bounced off the blade and fell into the sand and she looked at them blinking for a second when she suddenly understood. The boring part of training wasn't to master some arbitrary skill that she was only ever going to use sparingly, it was a literal life saver to be able to notice attacks before they happened, in the world of ninja she would be much better off with this lesson. She smiled and pocketed the training tools before waving at the shadows of the roof her teacher was sure to be on.
