Reo slowly made his way out of the Kiri village. He had to thank the old woman for what she had done for him. She had taught him a valuable lesson that he didn’t think he would have learned otherwise. The way the water moved… it was magical and had some great combat properties. He felt prepared to use it, though he didn’t think he was ready to use Suiton in the slightest. He would need to practice the chakra manipulation just like he did with Fuuton while he was an Academy Student and Genin.

Before Reo noticed what was happening, he was in the middle of a road, surrounded by forests. Snow was on the ground here, as was blood.

A shuriken flew from the trees nearby. Thinking fast, Reo dodged out of the way. A single bandit walked forward.

“Quick thinking, bastard.” The older man growled as he drew a sword from his back.

“Taijuu Kage Bunshin No Jutsu!” Reo roared as ten clones appeared from smoke. The bandit ran forward and sliced, destroying one of Reo’s clones.

Nine clones left, but Reo didn’t use much chakra in his clones. If he had to guess, he maybe lost 5% of his chakra maximum (10% Chakra Gauge). Still, where had this man come from? Reo jumped forward, his real body and kicked the man in the stomach. The force of Reo’s kick threw the man backwards and into the ground. He huffed and gasped as if some of his metal armor had broken and injured the man.

You shouldn’t wear such things when facing a ninja. His sword lay on the ground and one of Reo’s clones kicked it away as Reo approached.

A shuriken pierced one of his clones’ necks.

The puff of smoke was Reo’s first signal that he only had eight clones remaining. Next came the memories of a shuriken piercing through his neck. The memory of that recent pain was almost overwhelming but Reo took it in stride as he looked around. The shuriken had come from in front of…him.

There wasn’t just one more bandit. There weren’t just ten more bandits. An entire gaggle of them. No, an entire army of them marched out of the forest, shuriken in hand.

“Wha-what is this?” Reo asked as he quickly put his hands together. “Taijuu Kage Bunshin No Jutsu.”. Ten more clones, ten more percentage of his chakra gone. If his gauge started at two hundred, he’d have one hundred and eighty left.

Another shuriken pierced a clone.

Seventeen clones left.

“What’s this?” The bandit whose chest was smashed in asked in a taunting manner as he struggled to rise to his feet. “Why, this is nothing more than your demise – Reo Gojisou”

The bandit said his name so casually, but It struck a chord within the young monk. A chord that caused him to freeze as he contemplated the meaning behind it. How would he know his name? Why would they send so many after him? Did bandits usually travel in this large of a number? That didn’t seem right, but Reo couldn’t quite say why.

One of the bandits rammed a sword through Reo’s clone’s guts.

Poof.

“What’re we waiting for! Get him!”

The rush began. Reo quickly counted up his clones. Sixteen. He had sixteen clones to fight this mob of…however many bandits. Not enough. Not nearly enough.

“Tajuu Kage Bunshin No Jutsu!” Reo yelled as ten more clones appeared. Twenty-six, now. Better. Much better odds. Reo was distracted for a moment as he made the clones, so he turned his attention to the battlefield. The sixteen original clones and even the ten new ones were engaging the mob, moving in and out in quick well-coordinated patterns. Apparently being the same person lent themselves to fighting the enemy. One of the clones was all alone, facing off against three bandits. Reo began to run towards it, but it was too late.

The clone fell with a mace to the face.

Twenty-five more clones to go. That wasn’t a bad number, especially since he could see the clones felling some of the enemy. They were just such an overwhelming horde. Reo himself dodged blow after blow – unable to get an attack in edgewise against the opponent’s he faced. There were three of them, none particularly powerful, though their numbers more than made up for it.

“Hahaha. Which one is the real one do you think?” One of the oblivious bandits said with a cackle as Reo dodged his sword. He didn’t seem to mind being unable to hit the agile monk. Well, not agile, but still. More agile than these buffoons.

Reo turned his head just in time to see another clone fall. An arrow this time. That meant there was support somewhere.

Reo turned his head just in time to see the sword swinging towards him. He tried to dodge but was too slow. The blade too strong, too fast. It hit his skin and…shattered. The bandit had swung it hard enough to break the sword but it couldn’t break through his skin.

The entire battlefield seemed to stop.

“Shadow clones aren’t as strong as the real one.” The surprised bandit mumbled as he stared at his sword.  “Ignore those, get this one!”

Reo ducked as the bandits began to swarm. He punched and kicked, sending bandits flying but there were too many. A blade came for his face….a clone jumped in the way.

Poof.

The clone vanished. Reo punched directly where it had been a moment before and felled the bandit, knocking him through his allies as if they weren’t even there.

“Who are you people and why are you after me?” Reo asked as he sideswiped another person. These bandits wouldn’t let up and there were so many. “This isn’t a simple highway robbery”

“No, it’s not” Said a larger bandit who casually smashed one of Reo’s clones face in. He stepped forward, a ring forming around the real Reo and this extremely large bandit. He smiled at Reo, but it wasn’t a friendly smile.

Reo walked towards this man, unafraid of him due to his recent encounters. The bald monk’s forehead protector clearly marked him as a shinobi of Sunagakure – though Reo wasn’t entirely sure how accurate that was as he hadn’t been home since the Chuunin Exams. He hoped they didn’t think he was a Missing-nin. He didn’t feel like one. He was just on a sabbatical. A sabbatical being a fancy word to describe a vacation in which he gets to explore his own professional interests, in this case.

The large man smashed another Reo clone who leapt forward. The clones didn’t seem to understand the gravity of the situation. With that, Reo was done to…22?

“If it’s not a highway robbery then what is it?” Reo asked as he finally came face to face with the large man. He stood head and shoulders over Reo and his body was built like a well toned body builder’s. All in all, he was a much more intimidating sight than Reo was.

“You have something that our boss wants, little one.” The man said with a hearty laugh. Reo’s face contorted into a confused look – eyebrows frowned and downturned mouth. That is, until he figured out what the man meant.

The Ryu Caller. What else could he have that someone wanted.

“Kill them all!” The man shouted as he threw a hatchet at Reo. It collided with him, only for a log to appear.

Reo made his way to a treetop nearby. It was a dangerous move, but he needed more intelligence and they would hardly notice a missing Reo in the mass that was below. From here, Reo could see the large one that was -evidently – the leader was aware of what Reo had done. He looked up towards Reo, but shrugged his shoulders as he turned towards a clone and smashed his fist through the clone’s face.

It went away with a puff of smoke and Reo suddenly remembered the pain of that man’s fist. It was heavy. Evidently, the man had not seen Reo in the trees due to the foliage he was hiding behind.

The battle between the bandits and the clones raged. From this vantage point, he could get a good view of the clones and the bandits. The clones had about twenty of them left, but they were facing far more than that. The bandits easily numbered around 65 or 70 remaining. To his surprise, Reo could see a large number of them laying on the ground – unconscious from the battle with the clones.

The largest issue facing Reo’s mini-army was the large bandit. None of the clones seemed able to touch him. In fact, they began to leave a large swathe of land around him clear.

That one would have to be Reo to fight, as he was stronger than his normal clones. Yet, going down was dangerous when Reo could just send clone after clone down there.

Another one died. This one was an arrow- again.

Reo’s mind filled with the memories of the dead clone. The arrow…he had seen it fly at him this time. Just barely, but not with enough time to react to the blow. It was all Reo needed. Reo ignored the sixty five or so bandits below him and began to leap from tree to tree, trusting that his nineteen clones would deal with those bandits without much issue.

Well, long enough for him to get back. In the worst case, he would just make more. Reo’s mind began to wander as he ran towards the source of the bow and arrow, but then another clone died.

For a moment, Reo had to reorient himself. That clone had also died by an arrow. It took him a second to pinpoint where that clone was and where the arrow had fired from. Apparently the archer had shifted positions slightly, so Reo switched his route to move slightly more northeast. As he did this, the large bandit felled another clone.  What was that? Seventeen left?

Reo couldn’t help but think that he could easily run away while his clones distracted this horde. After-all, none of them knew where his real body was. But, he couldn’t leave until he figured out why an entire band of bandits were after him. Well, he had some ideas, but he didn’t know how true they were. Besides, he wanted to know who hired them.

There was one person before that had come after him for the scroll – and he had been powerful, but Reo had managed to win. In fact, Reo had won without too much hassle even though he had taken a hostage…. okay, there was a bit of a hassle until said hostage smacked him over the head.

Still, he never revealed who had hired him to come after the Ryu Caller. This was his first real shot at finding out. Reo arrived to see a long blonde haired man wearing all green fire an arrow. That arrow flew forward and pierced one of his clone’s heads.

Reo lashed out. He leapt forward, pulling his foot overhead and slamming it downwards. It smashed the man’s bow but, somehow, he had avoided the brunt of the attack.

This man was agile.

“Oh? I’m impressed you found me. My chakra can’t be sensed, ya know? You must be the real Reo Gojisou then? I’m afraid that I’m here to kill you and take that scroll off your back.” The man stretched. “name’s Amos Leroux. Nice to meet you.”

Elsewhere in the large battle, a Reo clone stood facing the massive behemoth of a bandit. It towered over Reo-clone. The axe smashed downwards.

“Amos Leroux.” Reo said bowing slightly. This man was trying to kill him, but he deserved respect as all combatants did. There was no reason for Reo to be disrespectful. “Before I destroy you, can you tell me who hired you?”

“Who hired me? Fraid not. See, only the big boss knows that. Me? I’m just a sniper. Though, now that I know that you’re the real one…well, let’s just say that I can make a bit more money if I bring the Ryu Caller to the big boss. “ Amos pulled a dagger out of his side. It was a dagger – not a kunai. Strange.

Reo could feel another clone die. They were slowly dwindling to nothing.

Thirteen clones. That’s all that Reo had left. The clones still existing didn’t seem to know the layout of the entire battle – or at least the ones that had died so far didn’t. That was troublesome for Reo and meant he needed to finish this archer off fast.

“Then let’s get on with this” Reo said with a shake of his head. This would be difficult with the way he moved before. As Reo watched, he saw the person vibrate before vanishing and reappearing a step from Reo. Reo reacted instinctively with Kawarimi.

The dagger pierced through a log as Reo jumped upwards and landed on a branch above.

Reo jumped downward as he gathered chakra around himself. The chakra swiftly changed to wind chakra and began to slice leaves as he fell. In midair, Reo turned and pointed his fist at the archer. The archer – to his credit – held his dagger upwards to block the blow. His body had stopped vibrating, so whatever strange jutsu he had used was over now. The dagger was knocked out of the way by the strength of Reo’s blow. Then, the fist and wind chakra drove directly into the man’s stomach.

The wind ripped at the archer as the force of the blow tossed him to the ground in a rush. Reo reached out as he cancelled his chakra and caught a branch, barely hanging on. In the back of his mind, another clone died. He only had thirteen clones left and there were likely a large number of bandits left.

Reo dropped to the ground with a thud and a cloud of dust. He placed his hands on the neck of the archer he had knocked to the ground. He could feel a faint pulse – which meant he was still alive. Reo began to dash towards the main group. Only their leader knew, huh? Well, it was time to take the fight to their leader.

The only problem is that Reo ran directly into a wall of bandits. Reo threw a punch at one’s back, causing him to crumple onto the ground from the force of the blow. As he prepared to perform a leg sweep, Reo was pushed out of the way of an incoming spear by one of his clones.

It dissipated into smoke.

Reo looked aghast at the spot he had been moments prior. That would have been his life if his clone had not noticed it. Reo’s clone had guessed it was the real one by the direction he was coming in. Still…Reo shivered. This was more dangerous than he thought. As the tired monk pulled himself to his feet, he glanced around. Many of the bandits were down by this point. In fact, most of them were. They outnumbered the clones about three to one. Well, that was better odds than he had anticipated. The battlefield had started to shift in a way that was favorable to the bandits and – as Reo watched – another clone was destroyed.

The bandits had separated the clones. Before, they had managed to hold out against superior numbers by sticking together and forming a circle – preventing themselves from being overwhelmed. Now, that circle had been penetrated and the bandits had gotten the clones into one on three fights. That’s where the trouble was beginning. Reo wanted to focus on the head bandit – but Reo could see two clones holding him off – though just barely. Reo could tell that he had a different task ahead of him, He needed to clear these groups so that his clones didn’t get overwhelmed. He could make more with his chakra supplies but it was a draining task and not one he particularly wanted to do.

Reo ran forward to a group of three just as they destroyed another clone.

Reo dashed in and replaced the empty spot that had previously been occupied by his clone. The three didn’t seem concerned – did they think that Reo was the same strength as his clones? Well, if so, then they would be sorely mistaken. He was three times as strong as the clones he managed to create.

Reo also knew their fighting styles from when his clone had been fighting them. Reo ducked underneath one’s spear thrust and leg swept him. A second swung a sword. Reo casually sidestepped it and kicked the sword out of his hand. Then, the third swung his hammer and this was what Reo had been waiting for. Reo grabbed the hammer midswing and guided it into the sword user’s stomach. He followed this up with a quick knee to the face of that one. Finally, he elbow dropped the one laying on the grounsd.

With all three down, Reo began to scan for more targets. Sadly, it seemed his clones weren’t faring as well. Another fell.

A group of six were fighting two clones. Reo ran towards this group. One clone was inches away from having their head sheared off by a sword, but it managed to duck in time. Reo managed to sneak into the empty space and deliver a blow to his stomach. The two clones each took one out in the confusion.

The other three stared at their three opponents and seemed to come to a conclusion. They all targeted one clone. Reo tried to deflect the attacks but wasn’t quick enough. The clone took three spears in the chest.

There were only eight clones left.

Reo dispatched those three rather quickly. In fact, too quickly. His clone dove in – enraged like Reo  himself. It took a bandit out itself before the other two dispatched it with spear thrusts. Reo moved with inhuman strength as he grabbed the spear from one of the men and swept it forward. The shaft of the spear caught one on the neck and threw him into his companion. Reo walked casually to the one remaining conscious and slammed the spear down onto his gut.

He dropped the spear. There were only seven clones left and…fifteen bandits? Including the large one who was still fighting the two clones.
